A few years ago, I got involved with Read Muskegon as a tutor.
I have been going to Holton Public Schools for 3 or 4 years now. My group this year are 8th graders and they came in on day one and talked very negatively about themselves because they were in "that class". I said "So what? All that means is that no one has found the angle you need to learn something yet." Little do they know, I was them not so very long ago.
Couple poems, couple short stories, some song lyrics all read out loud in front of a group.......mistakes are ok, no one here judges...mistakes can be funny, we can all laugh.....read out loud and keep going.
Since January..... I'd like you to hear what Coleton, Joel, Bailey and Heidi have done. If I had a couple more months with them, I could have them all capable of working part time from home working doing voice overs as teen actors.
Since I don't have a couple more months, but only a couple more visits, I'll make you wait for the grand finale of this year, but.....here's 2 minutes of proof about reading tutoring.......which isn't really about reading, it's about building confidence, skill and self worth. As they all heard themselves played back today, the level of pride in them was unmistakable.
